FOMO is out and JOMO is in

JOMO, or the “Joy of Missing Out,” is a powerful concept for brain health. It’s a way of letting go of the stress and anxiety often associated with the constant connectivity and information overload we all experience. Embracing JOMO allows you to step back from the pressures of constant engagement in social media or social activities, and instead focus on the people and things that truly matter to you. This intentional disconnect creates mental clarity and also reduces chronic stress that can lead to cognitive decline, allowing the brain time to rest and recharge.

By prioritizing downtime and personal reflection over FOMO—the fear of missing out—you create space for creativity, deeper thinking, and emotional resilience, all of which are essential for maintaining optimal brain health and longevity.

Here are a few practical ways I find the joy of missing out:

  1. Digital Detox: I regularly set aside time each week to disconnect from social media and my phone. This quiet time allows me to focus on activities that nourish my mind and body, like reading or spending quality time with loved ones.
  2. Prioritizing Self-Care: I schedule exercise and outdoor time without any guilt. These things help me recharge and be able to give my best the rest of the time.
  3. Mindful Living: I practice mindfulness by fully engaging in whatever I’m doing, whether it’s a simple meal or a conversation with a friend. By being present, I find joy in the moment rather than worrying about what I might be missing out on elsewhere.
  4. Setting Boundaries: I’ve learned to say no to activities and obligations that don’t align with my values or well-being. This helps me protect my time and energy for the things that truly matter to me.
  5. Enjoying Simple Pleasures: I find joy in simple, everyday activities like cooking a meal from scratch, working in the yard, or taking a walk with my wife in the evening. These moments remind me that happiness often comes from slowing down and appreciating the little things.

These JOMO practices help me stay grounded, reduce stress, and keep my brain and body in optimal health. By embracing the joy of missing out, you’re not just stepping away from distractions—you’re stepping toward a more intentional, meaningful, and healthier life. Your brain will thank you, your stress levels will decrease, and you’ll find that the time you gain is filled with more joy, clarity, and connection than you ever thought possible. Remember, sometimes the best thing you can do for your health and longevity is to simply miss out—and in doing so, truly live.
